Golden Axe is a side-scrolling beat 'em up developed and published by Sega. The PC Engine CD version adds enhanced audio and cutscenes to the original arcade-style action. Players choose among three fantasy warriors as they fight through Death Adder’s army to rescue the king and princess. Its fast combat, mount system, and flashy magic helped make it one of the genre’s defining classics.

The game uses a left-to-right side-scrolling structure where players battle waves of enemies across villages, forests, castles, and other fantasy stages. You can select Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, or Gilius Thunderhead, each with different reach, speed, and magic attributes. Core controls focus on attack, jump, and magic use, with throws and knockdowns used to control crowds. Stages also feature rideable beasts, item pickups, and boss encounters that end each area.

Ax Battler

A balanced swordsman with solid reach and straightforward melee attacks.

Tyris Flare

A fast female warrior whose fire magic delivers powerful area damage.

Gilius Thunderhead

A slow but powerful dwarf warrior with wide-range lightning magic.

Death Adder

The dark overlord and main villain who threatens the kingdom.

Save magic for large enemy groups, mounted foes, and bosses whenever possible. Use throws and enemy knockdowns to prevent being surrounded. On beast-riding sections, take advantage of special attacks, but avoid rushing too deep into enemy formations. In boss fights, learn the attack patterns first and strike during recovery windows.

No cheats or unlockables available

Tips

Knock enemies down and keep them on the ground to reduce pressure from crowds.

Tips

Magic is most efficient when used against tougher enemies or boss phases.

User Reviews

A classic fantasy beat 'em up with tight combat and excellent pacing.

User Reviews

The CD version improves atmosphere, but the core appeal remains the arcade-style brawling.
