Metal Slug X is a 1999 arcade run-and-gun title by SNK and an enhanced reworking of Metal Slug 2. It keeps the original campaign structure while revising enemy placement, weapon distribution, and stage pacing, and it notably reduces the slowdown that affected the earlier release. With its cartoon-style destruction, responsive shooting, and demanding co-op action, it is often regarded as the smoother and better-balanced version of that chapter in the series.

The game uses a 2D side-scrolling perspective where one or two players advance through missions by running, jumping, crouching, shooting, and throwing grenades. Players fight through several stages and boss encounters while using vehicles such as the Metal Slug tank, Slug Copter, and Iron Lizard. Weapon pickups include the Heavy Machine Gun, Flame Shot, and Laser Gun, while rescued prisoners grant items and score bonuses. Death sends the player back to checkpoints, making route knowledge and weapon control essential for survival and scoring.

Marco Rossi

One of the main Regular Army soldiers and a signature hero of the series, known for frontline combat.

Tarma Roving

A Regular Army operative with strong mechanical skills and excellent vehicle handling.

Eri Kasamoto

A fast and capable female soldier of the Regular Army, effective in dangerous missions.

Fio Germi

A support-oriented but battle-ready member of the team, recognizable for her balanced combat style.

General Morden

The main recurring antagonist whose forces form the core enemy army in the game.

Learn enemy spawn patterns in every mission, especially paratroopers, turrets, and ambush points. The Heavy Machine Gun is reliable for crowd control, the Laser Gun excels on lined-up targets, and the Flame Shot is powerful in tight spaces. Try to preserve vehicles for boss fights because they greatly increase your margin for error. Rescuing prisoners is useful not only for points but also for extra ammo and food. In co-op, split your coverage rather than standing on top of each other.
