Developed by Aspect and published by Sega, this 8-bit platform action game continues Sonic's trademark high-speed play on the Master System. It expands the series' running, jumping, and ring-collecting formula while showcasing colorful stages and tight level design. Often praised as a late-era technical highlight, it pits Sonic and his friends against Dr. Robotnik's latest mechanical threat.

This is a side-scrolling platformer where players control Sonic or Tails through distinct zones. The characters can run, jump, crouch, and build speed with slopes, springs, and other stage devices. Rings act as a buffer against damage, and stages must be cleared within the time limit by reaching the goal or defeating the boss. Depending on version and progression, special stages may appear to award Chaos Emeralds and affect the ending.

Sonic

The fast-moving hero who excels at momentum-based traversal and enemy smashing.

Tails

Sonic's companion and a playable character, offering agile movement and alternate route handling.

Dr. Robotnik

The main villain who deploys robotic enemies and boss machines to stop the heroes.

Use speed on straight sections, but slow down in unfamiliar areas to avoid pits and traps. Keep as many rings as possible to improve survivability after taking a hit. In special stages, memorize layouts and timing rather than forcing constant acceleration. Against bosses, learn the attack pattern first and strike during the openings.
