Played from an overhead perspective, the game has the player travel through towns, routes, caves, seas, and special facilities across Hoenn. Progress is driven by Gym battles, badge collection, and the Pokémon League challenge. Combat uses 4-move turn-based battles built around type matchups, status effects, and team synergy. Players catch wild Pokémon, level them up, evolve them, teach new moves, and manage items. Field traversal also relies on Hidden Machines, and later progression opens up additional areas and legendary encounters.
