Double Dragon was developed by Technos Japan and published by Taito as a classic side-scrolling beat 'em up. Players control Billy or Jimmy as they fight through urban gangs, using punches, kicks, throws, and the series’ famous elbow smash to rescue Marian. The SMS version preserves the core arcade-style action while adapting it to 8-bit hardware, and it is still remembered as an important action conversion of its era.

The game uses a side-scrolling stage structure where players move through streets, construction sites, and other urban areas, defeating waves of enemies to advance. Controls focus on movement, jump, and attack, with close-range throws and combo strings built around the elbow smash. The SMS version also includes unique bonus stages for extra points and rewards. Progress is linear, and losing all life forces a continue or restart.

Billy Lee

One of the Lee brothers and a main playable hero, specializing in close-quarters combat.

Jimmy Lee

Billy’s twin brother, appearing as another key Lee family character across the series.

Marian

The kidnapped heroine whom the brothers are trying to rescue.

Use the elbow smash to control normal enemies before they surround you. Against weapon users, steal the weapon or keep distance instead of trading hits in tight spaces. Jump kicks can interrupt rushing enemies, but aim your landing carefully to avoid counters. Learn the bonus stage patterns so you can score safely and consistently.
