The game uses a top-down perspective for town, route, and dungeon exploration. Players talk to NPCs, inspect objects, and advance the story through story-driven objectives and environmental clues. Battles are turn-based, with commands for attack, PSI skills, items, and defense, and the rolling HP system can leave a small window to recover before a character is defeated. Progression comes from gaining experience, leveling up, and gradually adding new party members as the story moves forward.

Ninten

The young protagonist of Mother, whose journey revolves around psychic powers and family mysteries.

Lloyd

A party member in Mother who relies on gadgets and items.

Ana

A key companion in Mother with PSI abilities.

Ness

The main protagonist of Mother 2, a boy destined to save the world with PSI.

Paula

A core companion in Mother 2 with strong PSI support.

Jeff

A party member in Mother 2 who specializes in repairs and technology-based tools.

Poo

A martial artist from a distant land in Mother 2 who can also use PSI.

Keep your party level appropriate for the current area and use defense and healing items to stabilize difficult fights. PSI roles matter a lot, so make sure healers and support characters always have enough PP and recovery items. Talk to NPCs often and inspect suspicious objects, since many progression clues are hidden in ordinary-looking places. Against enemies with rolling HP, quick healing can still turn a losing battle around.
