The game uses an overhead exploration view and turn-based command battles. Players travel through towns, routes, caves, and water routes while capturing wild Pokémon and building a party of up to six members. In battles, you choose moves, items, switching, or retreat, and advantage comes from type matchups, abilities, and status effects. As the story advances, HM moves such as Surf, Cut, and Flash open new paths and secret areas. The game also includes Gym challenges, villain-team events, breeding, and multiplayer trading and battling.

Build one reliable core battler early and add teammates to cover weaknesses. Before each Gym, stock up on healing items and bring moves that exploit the leader's type. Make good use of HM progression, since many routes and optional areas are locked behind them. Status moves like sleep and paralysis are extremely useful against stronger trainers. In the mid and late game, targeted training and breeding are more efficient than spreading experience evenly.
