The game uses a side-view 2D fighting format. Players choose one of eight characters and battle CPU opponents or a second player in best-of-three matches. Each fighter has normal attacks, jumps, blocking, and unique special moves executed with directional inputs plus punch or kick buttons. Progression advances through a sequence of international stages and opponents, with time limits and round victories determining advancement. Spacing, anti-air timing, and combo follow-ups are central to success.

Ryu

A balanced Japanese martial artist with Hadoken, Shoryuken, and Hurricane Kick.

Ken

Ryu's rival and training partner, similar in moves but more aggressive in rhythm.

Chun-Li

An Interpol agent whose fast kicks and mobility make her a strong pressure fighter.

Guile

A U.S. Air Force officer who controls space with Sonic Boom and Flash Kick.

E. Honda

A sumo wrestler specializing in powerful rushdown and close-range pressure.

Blanka

A wild Brazilian fighter who uses rolling attacks and surprise mobility.

Dhalsim

An Indian yogi with long-range stretch attacks and fire-based zoning.

Zangief

A Soviet wrestling champion focused on throws and close-range grappling.

Learn one character's special inputs and defensive timing before worrying about advanced tactics. Against the CPU, control mid-range and avoid reckless jumping, since anti-air reversals are common. Use jump-ins and forward movement to close distance against zoning characters, while keeping space and retreating carefully against grapplers. With Ryu or Ken, use projectiles to control pace and save uppercuts for anti-air defense.
