The game is a side-scrolling beat 'em up where you choose one of the four turtles and fight through linear stages packed with foot soldiers, hazards, and bosses. Each character has standard attacks, jump attacks, grabs, and throws, with some enemies and objects able to be interacted with. Stages mix traditional combat with vehicle sections, forced-scrolling sequences, and boss battles, while score is tallied at the end of each run.

Leonardo

The balanced leader, suitable for players who want an all-around fighter.

Michelangelo

A fast, agile turtle with quick close-range pressure.

Donatello

A longer-reaching fighter who performs well with safer spacing.

Raphael

A close-quarters specialist with strong speed and offense.

Shredder

The main antagonist who drives the Hyperstone scheme and appears as a key enemy force.

Krang

A recurring TMNT villain who appears as an important hostile presence.

When fighting groups, keep moving and use jump attacks or throws to break enemy formations before you get surrounded. For bosses, watch attack telegraphs and punish safely after each opening instead of trading hits. Match your character choice to the stage: some stages reward crowd control, while others are easier with strong single-target pressure.

The combat feels punchy and the stages are a good length for replaying.

Not identical to the arcade entries, but still one of the best TMNT action games on Genesis.
