The game uses a 2D side-view, one-on-one fighting format where players select a character and battle through consecutive matches. Bouts are typically best two out of three rounds, using directional inputs and attack buttons for normal moves, throws, and special techniques. Champion Edition adds playable Balrog, Vega, Sagat, and M. Bison, plus same-character matchups. Success depends on spacing, anti-air timing, fireball control, defense, and reading the opponent's habits.

Ryu

A disciplined martial artist who relies on Hadoken, Shoryuken, and Tatsumaki techniques.

Ken

Ryu's rival and fellow student, with a similar style but a more aggressive rhythm.

Chun-Li

An Interpol officer known for speed, mobility, and powerful kicking attacks.

Guile

A U.S. Air Force soldier who uses Sonic Boom pressure and Flash Kick anti-air.

Dhalsim

An Indian yoga master with long-range attacks and flame-based techniques.

E. Honda

A sumo wrestler built for close-range pressure and hard-hitting strikes.

Zangief

A Soviet wrestler with devastating throws and strong endurance.

Blanka

A wild, unpredictable fighter who uses rolling attacks and electricity.

Balrog

A boxer-style boss character with fast rush attacks and heavy pressure.

Vega

A claw-wielding, agile boss character with wall dives and high mobility.

Sagat

A towering Muay Thai master famous for Tiger Shot zoning and strong reach.

M. Bison

The final boss, notable for oppressive offense and strong screen control.

Beginners should start with Ryu, Ken, or Guile to learn projectile control, anti-airs, and basic pressure. Avoid jumping recklessly, since strong anti-air attacks can shut that down. Use standing and crouching normals to control space before committing to specials. Against grapplers, keep moving and deny close range. Against strong zoners like Sagat or Guile, bait projectiles and punish with well-timed jumps. Learning each character's effective ranges and wake-up pressure is essential.
